Mahadasha (often abbreviated MD, and sometimes called Dasha on its own) is the top, broadest layer of the Vimshottari system — a continuous stretch of years, from as short as 6 (Sun) to as long as 20 (Venus), during which one graha is considered the dominant, active theme-setter for the entire life. Everything that planet naturally signifies — its karakatva, the house it owns, the house it sits in — is nudged toward the foreground. A Mercury Mahadasha tends to bring communication, trade, learning and networking to the surface; a Mars Mahadasha tends to bring drive, conflict, property and courage to the surface. Which of those plays out as opportunity and which as strain depends heavily on how that planet is actually placed.
A Mahadasha is never read from the planet's significations alone — its house of occupation, the sign it sits in, and its overall dignity (exalted, debilitated, in its own sign, combust, or well- versus poorly-aspected) all combine to color the entire multi-year stretch. A planet that is exalted, sitting in a kendra or trikona house, and receiving benefic aspects tends to give a Mahadasha that feels expansive and productive in exactly the areas that planet rules. The same planet debilitated, badly placed in a dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th house), or afflicted by malefic aspects can turn the very same years into a period of delay, loss or hard-won lessons around those same significations.
It helps to think of a Mahadasha as the season rather than the day's forecast. A Jupiter Mahadasha broadly favors growth, learning, marriage themes, and good fortune across its 16 years — but within those 16 years there are still difficult months and easier months, because the finer-grained Antardasha (sub-period) layered inside the Mahadasha is what actually decides which specific events show up when. A well-placed Mahadasha lord raises the ceiling of what's possible during that period; a poorly-placed one lowers the floor.
