Dhana Bhava, the 2nd house, is read for accumulated wealth and moveable assets, the family one is born into, food and dietary habits, and — distinctively — speech (vāk): the voice, vocabulary and the way words are used to build or spend social capital. Classical Jyotish treats these as one theme, not several: whatever you've stored up, whether in a bank account, a family name, or a well-chosen sentence, is the province of the 2nd house.
The 2nd is one of only two Maraka ("killer") houses, along with the 7th — a technical term used specifically in longevity analysis, where the 2nd and 7th house lords are examined closely during periods that may threaten health. This sounds ominous, but it does not make the 2nd house unlucky for its actual significations: for wealth, family and speech, it functions as a fully constructive Panapara (succedent) house, and a strong 2nd house is one of the most reliable markers of financial stability in a chart.
In the Kalapurusha, the 2nd house corresponds to Taurus, ruled by Venus, and forms the face. Venus' imprint gives this house its taste for the tangible and the refined — accumulated comfort, saved resources, a pleasant or persuasive voice, and an appreciation for good food and beautiful possessions. Where the 1st house is about the raw fact of the self, the 2nd is about what that self starts to gather around it: family, resources, and a way of speaking that carries real weight.
The Rigveda has an entire hymn spoken in the voice of Vāk — speech herself, personified as a goddess who declares she moves with the Rudras and Vasus, that she gives strength to whoever she chooses, and that even the gods act through her. Classical Jyotish's decision to place speech in the same house as wealth is a quiet echo of that hymn: words, like money, are a resource that can be earned, hoarded, wasted or given generously, and both are judged by how they're used, not merely how much of them exists.
This is why a well-placed 2nd house is read for eloquence and a trustworthy word as much as for a healthy bank balance — and why classical texts warn that an afflicted 2nd house can bring harsh, careless or self-defeating speech quite apart from any effect on actual finances.

A strong 2nd house — its lord well-placed, benefics occupying or aspecting it, Jupiter (the karaka) unafflicted — tends to describe steady accumulation of wealth, a supportive family background, and clear, well-regarded speech. A weak or afflicted 2nd house often shows up as chronic financial strain, family friction or estrangement, or a manner of speaking that undermines the native's own interests — harsh words, poor timing, or a tendency to overpromise. As with every bhava, dasha periods of its lord are when these themes come due for resolution.
